My husband and I have a love hate relationship with gift cards. We’ve both know people who have held on to their gift cards too long and had the card expire. We also hate that some cards don’t have an expiration date but DO charge a monthly fee after a year which eventually makes them useless. This is why we generally avoid giving gift cards as gifts.
We do however love this time of year when it comes to restaurants and gift cards. That is because many restaurants are trying to encourage the purchase of gift cards with bonus programs. If you still have gifts to buy, you might want to consider buying a restaurant gift card and keeping the bonus for yourself. If we are dining at a restaurant that offers these bonus gift cards, we will often purchase the required gift card to pay for the meal we planned to eat and then keep the bonus card for a future visit.
