Manga Carrabba’s Italian Grill

I recently won a gift certificate for $50 from Carrabba’s Italian Grill. I’ll have to be honest. My husband and I both love Italian food but don’t generally like chain Italian restaurants. When I lived just outside of DC I sometimes drove all the way to Baltimore to eat at one of the great Italian Restaurants in Little Italy. You were guaranteed never to leave the table stuffed and mumbling something about how you ate too much. This didn’t mean that you regretted eating too much, rather it was an acknowledgement of having done so. I can still close my eyes and almost taste the home made canola from one of the bakeries there.

For Darryl and I always seem to find a favorite restaurant no matter where we live. There is a recipe for perfect Italian restaurant which is part food, part atmosphere, part service, and some je ne sais pas. I do know when I’ve found it though.

I had never been to Carrabba’s before but Darryl had been once before on a working dinner. We went to have a late lunch so that we wouldn’t have to rush. Before we went though we checked out their menu on line. It was a difficult choice but we were both in the mood for a nice steak dinner.

When we arrived at the Carrabba’s in Kennesaw, Georgia we didn’t have a long wait. Within five minutes we found ourselves sitting in an intimate booth. Big points for booths as Mr. Thrifty and I prefer booths especially in Italian restaurants. Our waiter came right out and took our drink order. I was in the mood for a glass of Sangria.

We both ordered a steak. I ordered the Filet Scampi and my husband ordered a Filet Fiorentina. Steaks and other items from the Wood Burning Grill come with a choice of house salad or soup and two sides. We both chose the house salad with its creamy parmesan dressing. For my sides I decided to try the spaghetti pomodoro and the cavatappi amatricina. Darryl decided to try the garlic mashed potatoes as one of his sides. While we waited for our salad our waiter brought out a basket of bread and seasoned olive oil.

The lighting was low and Dean Martin and Frank Sinatra played in the background. We had come hungry but didn’t stay that way long. Our salad came out to the table pretty quickly. I don’t eat much red meat so for me steak is a real treat. I just didn’t know what a real treat I was going to have. My steak was so tender it almost melted in my mouth.

Now, I’m really being won over. Great food, a friendly server, and the servings were abundonza!!!! I wound up taking half of my meal home. You see I HAD to save room for dessert. We had a coupon for a desserts sampler. It included three desserts from a special menu. This gave us a chance to try their Sogna di Ciccolata, Dessert Rosa, and Cannoli. Oh YUM on the Cannoli. It was just as good as the ones I used to eat back in Baltimore.

The Managing Partner Michael Shroeder even came by our table to talk with us. This made our meal even better. In small family run Italian Restaurants you often meet the owner. He usually comes by to talk to you and ask you how your meal was. I seldom experience that in most chain restaurants. This is definitely a place we would LOVE to come back to visit.

First of all I haven’t been to Sea World in some ten years. I can still remember this trip and it’s one that the boys and I still have fond memories of. As a matter of fact we bought one of those Sea World picture frames and in that frame is a picture of us having the time of our lives at Sea World.

Since I’ve been there are so many more opportunities to interact with the residents of Sea World. There is the SeaWorld Orlando's Beluga Interaction Program. You can actually get close enough to touch and interact with Beluga whales. You will also learn about the habitats and lifestyles of these animals.

They’ve also started the SeaWorld Orlando's Sharks Deep Dive. Now I’m not one to dive into the water with sharks but you don’t have to worry because you’ll be protected in an authentic shark cage. You can see over 30 sharks of more than five species—some more than nine feet long and come in contact with sharks so close you can touch them.

I’m also interested in the SeaWorld Orlando's Marine Mammal Keeper Experience caring for dolphins, beluga whales and sea lions. Work side-by-side with marine mammal experts and understand what it’s like to care for these amazing animals during a day. For an animal lover like me this would be a dream come true.

When the boys and I went we loved the Journey to Atlantis ride. Actually it was love at first splash and they wanted to go on that ride a few times. Wouldn’t you know it, they have a brand new ride coming this year called the “Manta”.

If you are a coaster fan then I’m sure you will want to know the stats:

• Height: 140 feet
• First drop: 113 feet
• Top speed: 56 mph
• Track length: 3359 feet
• Ride time: 2:35 minutes
• Height requirement: 52 inches

When they board Manta, passengers will probably sit in seats facing forwards. Once the ride ops check the restraints, a mechanism will likely tilt the seats 90 degrees clockwise, and riders will leave the station facing the ground in "flying" mode--although their knees will be bent. As with most flying coasters, Manta will probably take longer to load and unload than conventional coasters. Unlike any other flying coasters, however, Manta will have a compelling and unique ray theme. Passengers will be placed four across in cars shaped like rays. The rays will have wingspans of 12 feet.

The first drop will swoop down 113 feet and reach a top speed of 56 mph. As it curves at the bottom of the hill, Manta will skim along a lagoon and its wings will create a plume of water spray that will be quite a sight for riders and onlookers (and might soak them as well). The ride will include four inversions that will send passengers twisting and turning before returning them to flying mode.
The park says that even coaster wimps who have no intention to ride will want to check out Manta's pre-ride queue. Viewing tanks, enhanced by waterfalls and other themeing, will offer underwater glimpses of a variety of rays as well as sea dragons, sea horses, and many other species of fish.

I believe I answered why I want to go throughout this post but most of all, if I win I will be able to take my sons on a trip to recreate one of their favorite childhood memories before my youngest leaves for Iraq.

Valentine’s Day is here. How are you spending yours? Mr. Thrifty and I were very lucky this year. I won two passes to Medieval Times for Valentine’s Day. I’ve never been before and I’m so excited. I won that prize by writing an essay for a local radio station contest. I would encourage my readers to try entering essay contests because your odds of winning are higher because so many people don’t enter them..I had also written an essay for a radio contest to try to win a marriage renewal at Stone Mountain that’s scheduled for today. I didn’t win that but I won’t stop entering contests because of it.

We also won an evening for two at the High Museum. This was from our local newspaper. This was a random draw and not an essay contest. Which brings me to my second point, check your newspaper and local radio stations for free and inexpensive things to do today. When I was a struggling divorced Mom with two sons, I checked the local paper and listened to radio stations and learned about things like, free concerts, free admissions to local museums, free admission to state parks, etc. With the advent of the internet you can find even more fun things to do with your family. I’ve plucked some out for you.

I was born in DC and I love all the free activities that are always available there. So I will start with some great ideas for spending Valentine’s Day with your sweetheart.

Chocolate indulgence: Nothing says Valentine’s Day like chocolate. Spend Valentine’s Day weekend at the National Museum of the American Indian’s Power of Chocolate festival, learning about the history, medicinal properties and cultural influence of chocolate. Events include dancers, demonstrations and interactions with cacao growers. The event takes place Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 14-15, 2009, from 10:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. each day at the National Museum of the American Indian, which is located at Fourth Street and Independence Avenue SW.

Make it a movie night: Catch a flick or three. The National Gallery of Art is presenting a free viewing of “Ciné-Concert: Show Life” on Saturday, Feb. 14, at 4:30 p.m. in the East Building Concourse Auditorium. This German film is an “obliquely romantic tale of unrequited love between a waif and a knife thrower, a Madame Butterfly scenario filled with dance and cabaret.” The National Gallery is located at Fourth Street and Constitution Avenue NW. Afterward, head over to the National Geographic Society headquarters for a complimentary reception before an 8 p.m. presentation of “Departures,” a Japanese film that is a contender for this year’s Best Foreign Language Oscar. Tickets to the movie are $8, but hey, the popcorn’s free. National Geographic is located at 1600 M St. NW.

Lincoln love: Show some love for Abraham Lincoln by checking out the original Emancipation Proclamation on display from Feb. 12-16 at the National Archives. If you go on Feb. 14, be sure to check out the screening of “Young Mr. Lincoln” at noon in the William G. McGowan Theater. It’s free. The Archives are located at 700 Pennsylvania Ave. NW.

Starbucks is giving a free, large cup of coffee to its customers. It's all in honor of President-elect Barack Obama's historic inauguration and his plea to get more people involved in community service and volunteer work. Blog Contest experiment update

Well how is it going on the blog sweepstakes experiment?

Well good news. I did receive a win of hand made soap from a contest I had entered before I began the experiment. So I was waiting to win something this year. Here it is, the 11th day of January and I won. OMG Cathy, what did you win? Did you win one of those video games? I know you won one of those list makers right? Well I won't make you twist in the wind. I won the GymSoap giveaway. Interestingly enough I was notified that I will not be eligible to win a giveaway at Bloggy Giveaways for 30 days...but after that everything is fair game.

The Big Announcement

PlanetX64 bills itself as a site that provides hardware and software for the 64 bit world. It is a great site for Technology News Guides and Editorials. It was there that Catherine discovered the HP Magic Giveaway. HP and Microsoft. were giving away $6,000 worth of gear, including four computers (a 25 inch touchscreen desktop, two laptops and HP’s newest Netbook), a media extender, printer and a bunch of software/DVDs). Entrants had to create a slideshow showing the magic of giving and write an essay about the difference such a prize would make in the life of others.

Catherine is a Business Teacher at Rome High School. She teaches an Entrepreneurship class and four of her students have gone on to start their own businesses. She recently began blogging because of its application for marketing. Her blog “Thrifty Maven” (http://thriftymaven.com/) informs its readers of great deals and money saving ideas.

Word of Mouth is a tremendously powerful form of advertising and Blogs are an incredible tool for disseminating information. She knew right away what a wonderful addition an HP Notebook would make in her classroom. So she decided to enter this giveaway, hoping to win a computer for use in her classroom and for her youngest son who will be leaving for Iraq in February.

Save Money When Eating Out

When Mr. Thrifty and I go out to eat we always check to see if we have gift cards for a restaurant or coupons that offer buy one get one free entrees. We don't eat out much these days. This weekend my youngest son was down visiting and we wanted to take him out to eat before he left. It turned out that IHop has their All You Can Eat Pancake Deal going on AND we were able to combine this with a coupon for buy one entree get one free. Each of us ordered the two egg, hash browns, and all you can eat pancakes that went for $4.99. My husband, son and I were all able to come out completely stuffed to the gills for $17.83 including the tip.

This morning was very hectic with grocery shopping, CVS, my son leaving, and a meeting of our local Atlanta Peach Sweepers (more on them later). We decided to eat a big lunch and skip dinner.

We used a coupon found in today's paper for Ruby Tuesdays. They offered a buy on get one free off any specialty entree, steak, or ribs (really this amounted to almost anything on the menu except for lunch specials or burgers). We ordered the steak dinner which included all their all you can eat salad bar, two sides, onion straws and 12 oz rib eye steak. Usually I am full by the time I've eaten their salad bar. I think it's one of the best!!!! The bill was $24 total including tip.

My husband and I have a policy of tipping our waitress based on what the bill would have been if we had not used a coupon rather than what the bill came to after using the coupon. I used to work as a waitress and I really know what a stressful job this can be. Mr. Thrifty rewards good service and does not feel that it's not fair to be cheap at the expense of the waitress.

A Free Starbucks Sample Party On January 13, 2009

A friend gave me a coupon for a free tall cup of Tazo Tea Lattes so this morning I tried the Vanilla Rooibos Tazo Tea Latte. For me the description of the drink sounded far better than the actual taste. It is described as a full leaf African rooibos tea (naturally caffeine free), also known as red tea, paired with Tahitian vanilla and cinnamon. Sweetened with classic syrup and topped with steamed milk and velvety foam. Now doesn’t that sound yummy? The price, not so much.

As I said mine was free but I don’t think I will be headed back to spend my money there. I was also given a card which allows me to get a tall Tao Tea Latte or Tazo Tea Infusion for $2 after 2 pm.. The following items have been recalled by their manufacturers in coooperation with the Consumer Product Safety Commission. (CPSC).

1. Name of Product: Young Colors Children’s Hooded Jackets

Hazard: The jackets have drawstrings through the hood and at the waist. Children can get entangled in the drawstrings that can catch on playground equipment, fences or tree branches. In February 1996, CPSC issued guidelines (pdf) to help prevent children from strangling or getting entangled on the neck and waist drawstring in upper garments, such as jackets and sweatshirts. From 1985 through June 2008, CPSC received reports of 27 deaths and 70 non-fatal incidents involving the entanglement of children’s clothing drawstrings.

2. Target Recalls Dive Sticks Due to Impalement Hazard

Hazard: The recalled dive sticks could remain in an upright position, posing an impalement hazard to young children. CPSC banned pre-weighted dive sticks in 2001.

3. Children's Necklaces Sold Exclusively at Claire's Stores Recalled Due to Lead Poisoning Hazard

Hazard: The recalled necklaces contain high levels of lead. Lead is toxic if ingested by young children and can cause adverse health effects.

4. Hallmark Gold Crown snowmen globes. Approximately 7,000 snowman snow globes were recalled Tuesday for posing a fire hazard. The transparent globes at the center of these snowman-shaped knickknacks can magnify the intensity of sunlight passing through the glass, causing nearby objects to catch on fire. Importer Hallmark Cards Inc. of Kansas City, Mo., has received two reports of these Chinese-made globes causing surrounding objects to ignite. The snowmen globes were sold at Hallmark Gold Crown stores around the country in October and November. They can be returned for a full refund.

5. About 2,800 calypso steel drums, manufactured in Trinidad by Woodstock Percussion Inc. of Shokan, N.Y., because the surface paint contains high levels of lead, which is toxic if ingested by young children. No injuries have been reported. The drums were sold online, through mail order catalogues and at retail stores around the country between December 2006 and December 2007. 6. Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin is alerting Georgians to the recall of some cocoa products due to possible melamine contamination.

• G&J Hot Cocoa Stuffer Item 120144 (UPC 061361201444). This hot cocoa product was sold in small green and blue boxes with a backer card, candy cane and marshmallows.

• G&J His and Hers Hot Cocoa Set Item 120129 (UPC 489702201296). This cocoa product was sold with two ceramic mugs in a brown box.

• G&J Cocoa item 120126, sold in two flavors: French Vanilla Cocoa and Double Chocolate Cocoa. The G&J French Vanilla Cocoa (UPC 061361201260) was sold in a small green bag with a whisk attached. The G&J Double Chocolate Cocoa (UPC 061361201260) was sold in a small pink bag with a whisk attached.

The recalled products were imported into the U.S. by DMI and distributed nationwide to Big Lots during the weeks of September 22, 2008 and September 29, 2008 and to Shopko during the week of October 10, 2008.

9. Recall to Repair 985,000 Delta Enterprise Drop Side Cribs; Missing Safety Pegs Can Cause Entrapment and Suffocation Hazards.

When the safety pegs in the base of each leg of the crib are missing from the lower track, the crib locks can disengage and detach if lowered below the peg hole, creating a hazardous gap. This gap can lead to the entrapment and suffocation of an infant or toddler.

CPSC staff is aware of a death of an 8-month-old child who became entrapped and suffocated when the drop side of the crib detached in a reassembled crib where the safety pegs were not installed. CPSC is also aware of two entrapments and nine disengagement incidents in cribs where the safety pegs were missing.

The recall involves all Delta cribs manufactured in Taiwan or Indonesia, with the “Crib Trigger Lock with Safety Peg” drop side hardware design. These model numbers and country of origin can be located on the mattress support board label: 4320, 4340, 4500, 4520, 4530, 4532, 4540, 4542, 4550, 4551, 4580, 4600, 4620, 4624 (production dates 01/06 thru 11/07), 4640, 4660, 4720, 4735, 4742, 4750 (production dates 01/95 thru 12/00), 4760, 4770, 4780, 4790, 4820, 4840, 4850, 4860, 4880, 4890, 4892, 4900, 4910, 4920, 4925-2, 4925-6, 4930, 4940, 4943, 4944, 4947, 4948, 4949, 4950, 4958, 4963, 4968, 4969, 4980.

The recalled cribs have date codes ranging from 1995 through December 2005 and one model (4624) was made in 2007. The model numbers are located on the top of the mattress support board.

CPSC and Delta urge parents and caregivers to immediately stop using cribs that are missing a safety peg on any leg of the crib and contact Delta to receive a free, easy-to-install repair kit. The kit will include safety pegs in a bold color and warning labels to be affixed to the mattress board. Consumers with cribs that have all safety pegs installed may continue to use the cribs; however, CPSC recommends that these consumers contact Delta for the repair kit for future assembly purposes. Weight Loss Doesn't Have To Be Expensive

This is the time of year when people make those dreaded New Year's resolutions. I'm certain you will not be surprised to discover that weight loss is one of the most popular resolution.

According to a survey commissioned by Weight Watchers and conducted by Harris Interactive(R) about half (45%) of U.S. women say losing weight will be one of their New Year's resolutions for the upcoming year. Among those who will resolve to lose weight in the New Year. A recent study found 35 percent of people will break their resolutions by the end of January and only 23 percent will achieve their goals. The odds are against me you say. Why should I even try? I can't afford to lose weight now?

About seven years ago I lost 40 pounds. The weight had just crept up on me and it was easy for me to ignore a few pounds here and there until finally it was something I just couldn't ignore any longer. Once I finally made the commitment I learned so much about my body and food that I've been able to keep the weight off all these years later.

You can learn to eat healthy on a tight budget. Here are seven tips to help you do just that.

1. Read the nutritional values on the food labels. Make sure you are getting you money's worth. WebMd has a very informative article: How to Read Food Labels. Just because an item says it is "lite" doesn't mean it's better for you. Take advantage of sales at the grocery store and when possible combine them with coupons. Stock up when possible.

2. Eat your fruits and veggies. Sure our moms told us to eat our veggies and yes we get after our kids to eat their veggies, but do we really eat OUR veggies? You don't have to scratch fresh fruits and veggies off the menu just because money is tight. Shop the season. For example, apples are cheaper in the fall so is squash. Don't be afraid to try new fruits or vegetables. This autumn Mr. Thrifty and I tried spaghetti squash for the first time. We actually loved it and would eat it again. I know you believe your kids just don't or won't eat their vegetables but you can set a good example by making sure you eat yours.

"Veg-Up" your meals. If you read a box of hamburger helper they give you serving suggestions for veggies that would taste good with your meal. Vegetables are low in calories, which is good, and they are high in vitamins, minerals, phytochemicals and fiber. Frozen vegetables are quick, easy, and inexpensive. Heat them quickly on the stove or in the microwave. You can choose single vegetables such as peas, carrots, green beans, and cauliflower, or you can try seasoned blends of vegetables.

If you drop red meat, poultry and fish from your diet, you'll find plant proteins cheaper than the equivalent amount of animal protein. The cheapest cuts of beef, such as ground round, average $3 per pound in U.S. cities (lean and extra lean); boneless chicken breasts cost $3.40 a pound; and canned tuna is about $2 per pound. Compare that with dried beans and lentils at less than $1 a pound and rice well below $1 per pound. A vegetarian diet is also better for the planet, reducing water usage and global-warming gases.

3. Portions. I will have to admit this was the downfall for the slippery slope that caused me to gain those initial 40 pounds. My parents served meals with servings so large one would have thought they were feeding soldiers coming back from a ten mile march. I went on to have two boys who were on the fast track to vertical growth. Seconds? Why the heck not when it tastes so good. Oh the kids didn't finish that, I don't want it to go to waste so I'll finish it.

A serving of meat should be about the size of a deck of cards. I know, when I first saw that amount on my plate my eyes told my head "Are You Kidding?' Go to any restaurant and you will see huge, sometimes never ending servings of meat. Our bodies don't need as much meat as we think it does. We actually need far more servings of vegetables and fruits than we do of meat. You can fill in the gaps by serving whole grains with your meal. When you limit portion size, you can stretch your meals further. I used to make those helper meals when I was rushed for time and they always called for a pound of hamburger. Believe it or not they taste perfectly fine with half that amount, especially if you add your families favorite veggies.

While we're on the subject of veggies you can cut down the cost of your meals by serving vegetarians dishes two or three nights a week. Beans are a good substitute for meat and can provide many of the same proteins and fibers. Research has proven that a vegetarian diet can lower your grocery bill. It may even save you money on health care costs, since vegetarians are less likely to suffer from obesity or chronic illness. Hubby and I have found that vegetarian meals doesn't mean rabbit food.

4. You do not have to belong to a Health Club in order to exercise. You should definitely visit a doctor before you begin an exercise program. The United Stats Surgeon General recommends to add about 30 minutes of physical activity of moderate intensity activity each day ON TOP of your customary daily activities. The problem is that nearly 50% of people who start an exercise program will quit within six months.

The average American adult averages 3,000 to 5,000 steps a day. Wearing a pedometer is an easy way to track your steps each day. Start by wearing the pedometer every day for one week. Put it on when you get up in the morning and wear it until bed time. Record your daily steps in a log or notebook. By the end of the week you will know your average daily steps. You might be surprised how many (or how few) steps you take each day. If you take an extra 2,000 steps while eating 100 fewer calories a day is enough to keep most people from gaining the typical two pounds a year that comes with middle-age spread.

You can slip those extra steps in by using the stairs insteadof the elevator, parking further away from the door of you office, church, mall, or grocery store. Walk around the store or mall before you shop. Take a walk after dinner.

No time for a walk? To quote one of Mr. Thrifty's favorite sayings, "You can make time for anything you want." There is no television show that is as important as the walk hubby and I take together in the evening after dinner. We use this time to talk about how our day went, our hopes, and plans. It only takes a half an hour out of our day but it's worth it in so many ways. Hubby not interested in walking? My mother used to put the youngest in the stroller and walk us around the block. Since there were six of us at the time we looked like quite the little parade. It was amazing how many kids, who weren't related to us would tag along. Consider finding a buddy to exercise with or locate a few buddies you can call upon to join you from time to time. But don’t let a flagging commitment on the part of your buddy influence your commitment to your goals. If no one else will go with you bring your dog. My dog lives for his walk. Bring your i-Pod and program it with your favorite music.

Check out your local library for exercise DVD's. Our library has exercise programs which include belly dancing videos, Sweating to the Oldies, and so much more.

5. Keep a log. One of the best tips I ever received for losing weight was to keep a food journal. This makes you accountable for every bit of food you put in your mouth. I kept mine as a spreadsheet on my computer but many people find it even more telling to keep this information on a small calendar that you can carry with you wherever you go. You can make these as simple or as elaborate as you would like. I find it better to keep is simple. Here is an example of a food journal from the smart people at MIT. Another food diary can be found here. Are you using Weight Watchers? Use this site to help calculate the points you are consuming.
Keep an exercise log so you can monitor yourself.

6. One of the best ways to lose weight is through motivation. When you have people around to support you, it's easy to reach your goals. Join a support group like 10,000 steps. Yahoo support groups. Check out your local church, library, or community center. My workplace had a "Biggest Loser" support group last year. Each participant paid $10 to get in on the pool. There was a weekly weigh in. If you missed the weigh-in you had to cough up an additional $2. You paid a fine for gaining weight. At the end of the competition, the male and female who lost the most weight won the kitty.

7. Avoid Fast Food. Let me repeat that. Avoid eating fast food as much as possible. Instead, make large quantities when you cook and freeze the food in serving-size portions. Want some inspiration for breaking the fast food addiction? Check out the movie SuperSize me or Fast Food Nation.

I do. Ever since I learned to read, my world has been shaped, refined, and influenced by the books I have read. As an adult, with so many other things to get done, reading is my sinful pleasure. I got my first library card when I was six and by the time I was twelve I would spend afternoons in the library which became my sanctuary from the turmoil that surrounded my life. Last night hubby and I drove around the neighborhood looking at Christmas lights and listening to Christmas music. The twinkling of the colored lights in the darkness got me to thinking of a song I learned as a child, "This Little Light of Mine."

Each of us has a light (spirit) that longs to shine amid the darkness that surrounds us. So many of you strive daily to make the lives of others better, caring for relatives who are unable to care for themselves, a true commitment to community, nuturing your children, and donating to charitable organizations.

Here We Come A Carolling

When I was little my parents used to bundle us up into the car to drive into DC to see the fancy Christmas displays in the department stores downtown. On the way back home we’d look for Christmas lights while listening to Christmas music on the radio. Simple pleasures but with gas as cheap as it is now it can still be a pleasure that you and your family can enjoy.

Don’t really have much in the line of Christmas music? Well have I got good news for you. I was able to download enough free Christmas music to make two cds. I’m not just talking no name musicians. You can get music from one of today’s hottest country artists, Trisha Yearwood, Brad Paisley, and Faith Hill. You can also get classic artists like the Beach Boys, Bing Cosby, and Aretha Franklin singing your favorite carols.

About a week ago I had to watch the school’s choir teacher’s class while she took the Senior Choir to sing at a local assisted living home. She left the movie The Sound of Music. I didn’t get to watch the whole movie but I could still sing every single song from memory. That’s why I was thrilled to see that I could get My Favorite Things sung my Trisha Yearwood from Sears.

Less Bucks Butter, Nut, & Rum Coffee

Ingredient:
1/3 cup ground coffee
1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
1/2 teaspoon butter, nut, & rum flavoring

Directions:
Blend coffee and dry ingredients in a blender.
Blend in flavoring and extracts.
Scrape sides of blender and blend 15 seconds more.
Place coffee mix in a filter. Place filter on a square or plastic wrap. Draw together with a ribbon. Make this gift extra special by placing the wrapped filter in a coffee cup. Bonus points for a personalized one. (Remember that's why people pay $4 for coffee at Starbucks because they write your name on the paper cup)
Makes an 8 cup pot of coffee.

CVS Biggest Holiday Sale!

Today (December 21, 2008) and tomorrow will be a great day for saving money at CVS but you need to act quickly.

I’m having to start all over again after suffering that horrible condition of Ilostus-ecbus. This is a tragic affliction which generally happens when one puts their ecbs in a place one generally feels is safe, only to discover the ECBs have somehow disappeared. So I actually lost almost $50 in ecbs!!! You think having your computer crash is the end of the world.

In an effort to begin my ECBs anew I was thrilled to discover this big holiday sale. In order to do this deal with the least amount of money I broke it up into smaller deals.

The first purchase was five Listerine Antiseptic Cool Mint (500 ml) Be sure you buy this one because none of the others will work. Normally these are $4.29 but they are on sale saving you an initial $1.30 per item. You can purchase up to five of these and receive a $2.99 ECBs for each purchase. In this purchase I threw in two Revlon Classic Nail Polish which were on sale buy one get one free. The nail polish wound up being $4.99 for two, but I still had two coupons for $2 a piece which brought this part of the purchase down to 99 cents. I’m a firm believer in shopping all year for Christmas and these will go towards NEXT year’s gifts. I paid $15.94 out of pocket but received an ECBs for that amount.

Next purchase was two L’Oreal HIP Metallic eye shadow. My nieces will love this for their birthdays next year. These were $6.99 each and you could buy up to two per person to get back the full price in ECBs. I added to that order Excedrin Extra Strength, Express Gels (20 gelcaps). They were on sale for $3.99 and you will receive an ECB for that amount. I was able to use a $1.50 coupon for ANY PAIN RELIEVER generated by my previous purchase as well as the $14.95 ECB. Out of pocket that order was $1.63 after taxes.

I used the $3.99 coupon generated by the previous order to help pay for the next order. I bought one Sally Henson Lacquer Nail Dazzle which goes for $5.99. I also bought five Hershey bars. I also used a coupon for $1 off the purchase of two Hershey’s Dark Chocolate bars. I also used a coupon generated for buy three Hershey bars and get one free. I paid $4.81 out of pocket and received a $5.99 ECB
This week you can buy three Promax Bars (2.64 oz) for $5 and then receive a $5 ECB. This was part of my next order. I also bought a Hall Naturals Honey Lemon cough drop which were $2.59 and used a 50 cents off coupon to receive the $2.59 ecb. I also bought SlimQuick Energy for $4.99 with a $4.99 ECB. I’ll admit it. I’m a real soda fiend. Hubby always teases me about it. If you bought $15 of any coke products you get back $5 in ECBS. I will tell you that this is the lowest price this week for soda in my area. I know because I just went to Kroger and their “sale was two 12 packs for $8. CVS had twelve packs on sale for 3/$11 I bought three twelve packs and four 2 ltr Cokes. I used one of my ECBs and brought the price down to $11 and then got back $5 in ECBs.

One more purchase and that was the Iceland healthy Joint (60 ct) This item was a bit pricey at $29.99 but you did get the full-price rewarded back as an ECB. So I bought it. With all these ECBs in my pocket I feel like it’s finally game on time again. There were other things I wanted to buy but the ladies at the CVS in Dallas told me that there were people at the door at 7 a.m. this morning and bought up a lot of stuff.

What's Free Under The Tree

Like so many others, we’ve cut way back on spending this Christmas. Then again I’ve always been able to buy super gifts that have the Wow factor for the recipient without the Oww factor for my wallet. Let me share what’s under the Thrifty Maven’s tree this year.

For hubby there is an 11x14 collage photo poster from Snapfish. I bought it when they were running a special for free shipping and I was able to use a credit I had for a free poster. Mr. Thrifty and I have been married for seven years now and I thought he’d appreciate a collage of happy moments we have spent together. The other gift he will be opening come Christmas day is a mouse pad which features a photo of us taken on our last vacation. This was another free credit I had earned on Snapfish and I ordered it when I ordered the poster. I was also able to take advantage of a promotion advertised on Oprah for a free 8x10 hard covered photo book. Hubby and I had won a weeks’ vacation at an all inclusive resort in St. Lucia and I used the pictures from this vacation to create a unique gift. Out of pocket for hubby this year? ZERO dollars but don’t tell him because he’ll think I spent a fortune.

Hubby has learned a thing or two because I do know that I’m receiving something from Victoria’s Secret. He’s not as good at keeping secrets and besides I had to go with him to pick my gifts out. I’m really big on shopping for gifts all year. This is a HUGE savings. Twice this year Victoria Secret sent us a coupon for a free pair of panties. They even put the panties in the cute pink bags and I’ve spied them under the tree.

The grandkids reaped HUGE benefits this year from my sweeping hobby. They received those Indiana Jones Lego sets. Altogether these Lego sets were valued at over $300. I won them though but the grandkids won’t care if I won them or bought them. Total out of pocket for their gift, $20 and that was for shipping.
Speaking of wins I sent the boys gift cards that I won. Dan, my oldest received a $100 gift card from AMC Bowling Centers. Michael received a $25 gift card from Barnes and Noble and a $25 gift card from iTunes. Total cost of their gift under a dollar for stamps.

The big gifts this year haven't arrived yet and are free!!!!!!!! I won FOUR computers. Hubby will be getting a new touch screen, the boys will each be receiving a new HP notebook computer, and I will be gettng a new notebook computer and printer. This was an amazing blog contest and as soon as I receive this prize I will tell you more about it.

How To Save Money On Dryer Sheets

When I was a little girl we hung our clothing out to dry and I loved the fresh smell of line dried clothing. Now there are many communities that restrict you from having a clothes line, so much for green technology. If you use a dryer and want to save money on dryer sheets try the following suggestions.

Did you know that you don’t need a full dryer sheet to reduce static? You can cut your dryer sheet in half and it will still be quite effective. Doing this will make the box last twice as long and it’s good for the environment because you are only generating half as much waste.

Recycle, Reduce, and Reuse for a better environment by making your own dryer sheets. I found a recipe that will allow you to make a reusable dryer sheet that will last twenty washes if you aren’t doing heavy loads. It’s a it of work but it’s worth it. Your clothes can still have that smell if that’s what you want and they will come out of the dryer just as soft as if you’d used the commercial dryer sheets. The directions are listed below:

•Take a wash cloth and place it in a pint sized jar.
•Pour your fabric softener in the jar over the rag and filling it almost to
the top. Place the cap on the jar and allow to sit for a few hours.
•This next step is messy and requires gloves and should be done over a bowl
in the sink. Remove the rag from the jar and squeeze the liquid into the
bowl. The rag should be damp but not dipping.
•Hang the wash cloth to dry and pour the recaptured softener back into the
bottle.
•The washcloth should be ready to use in about 24 hours.

Want to do your part for combating Global Warming? Reuse your dryer sheets. You can slip a dryer sheet in your pillow case to freshen them up. Used dryer sheets pick up dust without using any cleaning products. Place an individual sheet in a drawer or hang in the closet. Used dryer sheets take the odor out of books and photo albums that don't get opened too often. Place a sheet at the bottom of the wastebasket to eliminate odors. You can also eliminate odors in dirty laundry by placing an individual sheet oat the bottom of a laundry bag or hamper.

I liked this site so much i told my students about it as the prom approached. One of the kids used it to save money when taking his girl to a nice local restaurant. I was thrilled.

It's pretty easy to use. You find a restaurant in your area or the area you plan to visit. Then you buy a certificate then print it out. Take that certificate to the restaurant and enjoy. Certificates are good for up to one year after purchase.

I would suggest that you try to use them as soon as possible because we did have a couple of occasions where we bought a certificate and then when we finally planned to use it the restaurant went out of business. Another time we were enjoying a really wonderful meal at a nice local Italian restaurant and the manager told us that he was going to stop participating in the program because not enough people were taking advantage of it.

Often you will find codes to bring down the price of the certificate and I just happen to have one.

Go to Restaurant.com and use the code SANTA when prompted for a code. You will be able to purchase a $25 gift certificate for only $2. You can use them as gifts but remember to thoroughly read what the certificate is good for. Generally they do NOT cover drinks and your total bill must equal a certain dollar amount.

I have always been happy with my purchase but before I buy a certificate I call the restaurant to make sure they are still honoring them.

Do You Regift?

Today’s Thrifty Moment is a touchy one for some, it’s regifting. Surveys show a slight majority of people believe that regifting is acceptable. Which means that the rest of those surveyed think regifting is, well cheap.

So how can you regift without appearing tacky?

My first suggestion is don’t regift a gift to the original gift giver. We’ve all heard horror stories about such events. I remember going to a bridal shower once and the bride opened the gift to find a pair of silver engraveable goblet’s. As she pulled the goblets out of the box a small card fell to the ground. The card revealed the proof that this was a regift. On it was a card that said “Best of Luck always to you both Elizabeth and Bill. Love Alma” The problem was Alma, the bride to be had originally given the goblets to Elizabeth who had not only regifted the goblets but forgot to remove the original card before wrapping.

You can avoid this faux pas by keeping a notebook for this purpose or even sticking a colored 3 x 5 card in the box with the name of the gift giver and the date given written right on it. Make sure you TAKE THE CARD out of the box before wrapping.

In the same vein don’t give partially used gift cards. Some gift cards say clearly they are for $50. Even if you still leave $25 on the card it still looks tacky. Unused gift cards can be nice gifts but make sure they are for things that the recipient would like. I certainly doubt that my seventy year old father will be buying anything from the Express store in the mall.

One of the worse gifts I ever received was a perfect example of regifting gone awry. I was given a vacuum cleaner for Christmas by a relative. Now perhaps the fact that the gift was “wrapped” in a trash bag should have signaled to me the quality of the gift. Now I’m no vacuum connoisseur but even my untrained eye could tell that the vacuum had been used before. I thanked her for her thoughtfulness but to this day I will remember that I had to change out a full vacuum bag before I could use it the first time.

While I’m at it let me suggest that you wrap the gift with fresh paper. Nothing screams regifting so loudly as torn is torn or crinkled. Oh and trashbags? Not always such a great idea.

So do I regift? Yes. As a matter of fact that’s what we are going to take a look at right now. The other day I received this cute little door hanger. I really don’t have any use for it, but like many regifters, I’m hoping that it will find a nice home elsewhere. This regifting is the perfect kind. The person who gave this to me does not even know the recipient. It’s also a perfect regift because I can use the original packaging. Talk about being green.

As a matter of fact as long was we are talking green let me show you the next gift. I’m using a Starbucks bag. I love these little bags because they have the handles and Starbucks SCREAMS indulgence. In this gift I’m placing a small cosmetic case that I won. The case had an ARV of $10 so just throwing that someone’s way might be nice enough if you were doing a secret Santa. As a Grandma, I can say with a great deal of authority that the gift I'm hoping I will find under my tree this year will be ANYTHING with photos of my grandkids. (IMHO the most beautiful kids in the world).

Black Friday 2008

This has been a deadly Black Friday. There is a story in the news today about the death of a Walmart employee in a Long Island store that was caused by people rushing through the doors to get at the deals. In that same store a woman was thrown to the ground and then miscarried. Who needs to shop at Walmart that much? There was also a murder suicide at a Toys R Us in California. A little six year old was killed.

As far as Darryl and I were concerned there really was no reason to try to go on a massive buying spree. The kids and the grandkids already got their gifts. My nieces, mom, and dad also got their gifts the last time we went up to Virginia. Again, funny how that worked out, we had brought all the gifts with us because I thought it would make traveling up in the winter easier. Who would have thought we wouldn’t have been able to travel then?

In the last few years we started a tradition that started with a cup of mint hot chocolate from Starbucks. Luck found me there because Starbucks actually sent me a gift card for a free drink because I complained about how I was treated the last time I went. So Starbucks was still part of the tradition this year.

Then we went over to Belk. Belk was opening early and having a gift card “sale”. Basically the first 250 people through the door got a gift card. The card was worth at least $5 but it could have been worth up to $5,000. Hey we were already shopping for next Christmas so this was going to work out even if we only got a $5 card. They were supposed to open at 5 in the morning but when we got there it appeared that they had opened early. The manager mentioned that one person had already won $100 on her card. Darryl and I were not quite so lucky but still we each had $5 and we bought some of those little slipper socks. I love those things. They were on sale for $5 so we bought two. One for each card.

The only other one that I was kind of interested in was one at Tuesday Morning. There was a 50% off coupon in the circular on their clearance stuff. I finally found a pair of chenille gloves that we bought for $1.50. That will be Mom’s gift for next year. They were really nice, one grey and one black.

It will be interesting to see how sales went for retailers on Black Friday. Darryl felt the prices were unbelievably low on many things but they were things we didn’t need to buy we just priced those things and looked at them. Things like TVs and digital photo frames.
